The camera does not work in Windows 10

If your camera is not working in Windows 10, a recent update may be due to missing drivers. It is also possible that your antivirus is blocking the camera, that your privacy settings do not allow camera access for some apps, or that there is a problem with the app you are trying to use.

before you start

Before attempting any of the solutions listed here, you should first consider the following:

  • Check for updates. Choose begin, then choose Settings > Update and security > Windows Update  > Looking for updates. If the option View optional updates available, select it to see if updates are available for your camera. Allow the available updates to be installed and then restart your device when the process is complete.

  • Restart the PC. If you haven't restarted your device since the camera stopped working, this is what you should do. Choosebegin, then chooseOn offStart anew. Waking your device from sleep is not the same as restarting it.

  • Test the camera with the camera app. Choose begin, and then choose Camera from the list of apps. When asked if you want to allow access to the camera, choose Yes. If the camera works in the camera app, the problem may be with the app you are trying to use.

If your camera still doesn't work, there are some things you can try below. For best results, try the possible corrections in the order they are presented.

Check to see if your device has a switch or button for cameras

Some laptops and mobile devices have a switch or button that can be used to turn the camera on or off. If the switch / button is set to Off, your device will not recognize that a camera is installed. If your computer has a switch or button like this, make sure it is turned "On" before using the camera.

Check your settings

Give your applications the necessary authorization

If you've recently updated Windows 10, you might need to give some apps permission to use the camera. In newer versions of Windows 10, some apps don't have standard access to the camera.

To allow your device to access the camera, selectbegin , then chooseSettings > privacy > camera. If under Allow access to the camera on this device the option Camera access for this device is disabled, select To change and enable Camera access for this device

Make sure that camera access for apps is enabled in your user account before apps can access your camera. Make sure, that Allow apps to access your camera is activated.

After allowing access to the camera, switch to Choose which Microsoft Store applications can access your camera, and enable camera access for the applications you want. This list only shows apps that were installed from the Microsoft Store.

If the app was installed for you from the Internet, from data storage media, a USB drive, or by your IT administrator, it might not be a Microsoft Store app. To check this, switch to Allow desktop apps to access your cameraand make sure it is checked. Many video conferencing applications such as B. Microsoft Teams are desktop apps that require this setting to be enabled.

Check the antivirus software

Check the settings of your antivirus software for settings that deny access to your camera or permissions to use your camera. Go to the anti-virus software company's website for help.

Check your hardware drivers

Try a different USB port and check for hardware changes

If you are using an external camera, try a different USB port on your device. If that doesn't work, or if your camera is built into your device, try the following:

  1. Choosebegin , give Device manager select the camera from the search results.

  2. Find your camera under Cameras, Image processing equipment or Sound, video and game controllers.

  3. If you cannot find your camera, choose the menu action off and then Search for hardware changes.

  4. After finding and installing updated drivers, restart the device, and then try opening the Camera app again.

  5. If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue with the next few steps.

Check for an incompatible camera driver

Some older cameras designed for older devices are not compatible with Windows 10. Here's how you can check if your camera is compatible:

  1. Find your camera in the Device manager under Cameras, Image processing equipment or Sound, video and game controllers.

  2. Press and hold (or right-click) your camera's name, then select properties.

  3. Select the tab driver and then the button Driver details, and look for a filename that ends with stream.sys includes. If the file exists, your camera was designed prior to Windows 7 and you will need to replace it with a newer camera.

  4. If you can find a filename that is stream.sys contains, continue with the next steps.

Reset the camera driver

If your camera stopped working after an update, try these steps:

  1. Keep im Device manager Hold down your camera (or right-click it), then select properties.

  2. Select the tab driver off, then Previous driver and finally choose Yes. (Some drivers do not offer this option. If the selection Previous driver is not available for your driver, continue with the next fix.)

  3. After the previous driver is restored, restart the device, then try to open the camera app again.

  4. If the reset didn't work or is not available, continue with the next few steps.

Uninstall the camera driver and check for hardware changes

  1. Keep im Device manager Hold down your camera (or right-click it), then select properties.

  2. Select the tabdriver and subsequently Uninstall device. Check the box for Clearthe driver software for this device, and then select OK.

  3. Select the Device manager in the menu action the option Search for hardware changes out.

  4. After finding and installing the updated drivers, restart your PC, then try opening the Camera app again.
