Institute for Microbiology: Of pathogens and commensals and their recognition by the innate immune system

The Institute for Microbiology at the Charité emerged from the Hygiene Institute of the Berlin University founded in 1885 (founding director: Robert Koch) (history of the institute). The employees of the institute are the Unity of health care, research and teaching committed and try the term in their daily work, at the highest university level Charité to fill with life.

The research of the institute (at Benjamin Franklin and at the German Rheumatism Research Center) is dedicated to basic microbiological and infection immunological research. The focus of interest are:

  • understanding the innate immune system in fighting off infection and
  • research into the role of the complex groups of bacteria and viruses that colonize us (the so-called microbiota) for our health, for the development of diseases and for immune system fitness

The clinical-microbiological diagnostics is under the technical direction of the director of the Institute for Microbiology at Laboratory Berlin carried out. The entire range of microbiological diagnostics is offered there using the most modern methods. The microbiology and hygiene department of Labor Berlin processes more than half a million samples every year and supplies more than 24,000 beds (Labor Berlin). In addition, our employees make visits to infectious focal points of the Charité, the clinics of the Vivantes Group, the German Heart Center Berlin and the Accident Hospital Berlin in order to prevent nosocomial infections and the clinically active colleagues in rational and pathogen-adapted antibiotic therapy to support.

In addition, the institute's staff are involved in the Teaching Involved by students in the model course in human medicine and the courses in dentistry, pharmacy, molecular medicine and biology (teaching)
