What is a fleeting existence

The fleeting existence of the Vilém river

He is considered one of the most influential thinkers in communication and media in the last decades of the 20th century. Vilém Flusser (1920-1991) accepted the challenge of rethinking the arts in view of our increasingly technical existence.

Flusser's thinking and writing was a permanent experiment of survival in the diaspora. At the age of 19, the man from Prague fled the Nazis via England to Brazil, where he lived for thirty years. His entire family died in the German fascist concentration camps.

At the end of the 1980s, Flusser became the star of media theory in Europe and, as such, often appeared in academic forums and arenas in Germany. His writings have titles such as "Into the universe of technical images", "In praise of superficiality" or "For a philosophy of photography". In the Berlin exhibition »Bodenlos«, which is dedicated to Flusser and which begins this Thursday, alongside manuscripts, image and sound documents, works by around 40 artists to whom Flusser refers can be seen.
