Which phone is better under 100

The smartphones of the big manufacturers are getting more and more expensive, better and bigger. Just recently, Samsung presented the latest devices in its Galaxy S20 series. The flagship devices are not for the small budget. Not every smartphone user needs a 4K-capable quad camera or the greatest computing power. For many users, there is also a suitable device in the lower-priced segment. We have already presented the best smartphones under 200 and under 300. For those on a tight budget, we present the best smartphones under 100 euros in this article. We also provide you with some tips on buying a cheap smartphone.

This is what you can expect in this article

Buy cheap smartphones - you should pay attention to that

There are a few things to consider when buying a cheap smartphone. Because said right at the beginning: If you decide to buy a smartphone for less than 100 euros, you will have to cut corners. Here you have to pay attention to which functions of a cheap smartphone are decisive for your requirements and to filter the offer accordingly.

The camera

So you won't find a smartphone for less than 100 euros that takes really great pictures. Some of the cameras are passable, but you shouldn't expect really good results in this price range. The devices from some manufacturers pimp the images that the camera shoots with the help of an AI, but the results still do not keep up with the razor-sharp images of most of the more expensive devices.

Performance and memory

In terms of performance and computing power, you shouldn't have too high hopes for a smartphone under 100 euros. The question is, what do you need your smartphone for? To play? Then it becomes difficult. Do you want to create social media content on the go? Difficult too, but not impossible. If you are more on the text level, the 2 GB RAM and 2 GHz that most inexpensive smartphones have should be sufficient. Editing image or video content could, however, be difficult. If you are planning to use your smartphone for work, you should generally refrain from using such cheap smartphones.

But if you just want to check emails, use messengers, surf the Internet or social media, then a smartphone should be sufficient for you even if the price is less than 100 euros.

The battery

The low performance of most cheap smartphones has something positive. It consumes less power and therefore the batteries often last longer. In this respect, you are consistently well advised with the devices that we present to you in our overview. You don't have the annoying loading that we know from high-end devices here.

the display

If you intend to buy a device for streaming on the go, we strongly advise you not to buy a smartphone for less than 100 euros. Because actually none of these devices comes with a Full HD resolution. In addition, the screens are usually very small. And if they are not, the low resolution often creates blurring, which in turn is annoying. These are acceptable values for reading texts and browsing, but rather not for just watching series and streaming.

Tip for buying - take advantage of offers at discounters

Entry-level smartphones are always on offer. So if you are looking for a smartphone, be sure to look around in stores like Aldi or Lidl. There are sometimes smartphones for less than 100 euros that would have been more expensive in normal sales!

The Alcatel 1S for less than 100 euros

The Alcatel 1S (2019) is still one of the younger devices from the low price segment. With a 5.5-inch display and dimensions of 14.78 x 7.07 x 0.86 cm, it is relatively handy but not so small that it would be annoying. The resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels is not great, but it is okay. The black bars on the top and bottom of the front don't make a particularly modern impression either. Especially since the Honor 8S is one of the best smartphones under 100 euros and already relies on a drop notch.

The dual camera on the back of the Alcatel 1S has a resolution of 13 and 2 megapixels. The front camera has 5 megapixels. This is also absolutely okay for the price, but it cannot keep up with the cameras of more expensive devices. The 32 GB internal memory can also be expanded by 128 gigabytes with a microSD card. The battery is also really okay for a smartphone under 100 euros with 3,060 mAh. The Alcatel 1S doesn't calculate really fast, but the Unisoc SC9863A processor and 3 GB of RAM are sufficient for surfing and simple games. The size of the working memory is not bad at all in this price segment and makes up for the somewhat poor processor performance. The Alcatel 1S also has a fingerprint sensor and the option to unlock the device with facial recognition.

The Huawei Y5 for less than 100 euros

From a visual point of view, the Huawei Y5 is a bit more modern than the Alcatel 1S. Huawei does without the somewhat annoying black bars on the top and bottom and instead uses a drop notch at the top of the screen. This encloses the front camera, which has a resolution of 5 megapixels. The main camera on the back consists of just one lens with a resolution of 13 megapixels, as is not uncommon for most of the best smartphones under 100 euros. So the Huawei Y5 is not a photo miracle. The aluminum housing also makes a very valuable impression.

The display of the cheap smartphone is not particularly large at 5.71 inches, but also not particularly small. With a resolution of 1,520 x 720 pixels, Full HD is not included here either. With a smartphone for less than 100 euros, however, this is also a smear that can be made with a clear conscience. Inside, an MT6761 quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM ensure a sufficient speed of 2 GHz. You won't be able to play big with the Huawei Y5. However, the built-in chip makes the Huawei Y5 one of the best smartphones under 100 euros. The performance is sufficient for occasional reading of e-mails or surfing and enables smooth multitasking. The battery with a capacity of 3,020 mAh gets you through the day quite well, but is also not overly large. At 16 GB, the cheap smartphone's internal memory is pretty tight. However, it can be expanded by up to 256 GB with a microSD card. The Huawei Y5 is definitely one of the best smartphones under 100 euros.

The Honor 7A for less than 100 euros

With its 5.7-inch HD + display, the Honor 7A is neither ahead of nor behind the other best smartphones for less than 100 euros. The two black bars on the top and bottom of the screen are also noticeable here. In terms of speed, too, the cheap smartphone makes the most essentials and stays with the expectations of this price range. The quad-core processor has a maximum performance of 1.4 GHz and is supported by 2 GB of RAM. Everyday things are possible with it. The performance of the Honor 7A is not particularly great, even for smartphones under 100 euros.

Compared to the best smartphones under 100 euros, the Honor 7A's battery is a bit smaller. With 3,000 mAh, however, it is still big enough to get you through the day. The internal memory is also comparably average with 16 GB. As with the other smartphones, this can be expanded for less than 100 euros. In contrast to the Alcatel 1S and the Huawei Y5, the Honor 7A does not come with Android 9 but with Android 8. That is a shame. It can be unlocked using the fingerprint sensor and face recognition.

Honor 8S for less than 100 euros

The same chip is built into the Honor 8S as in the Huawei Y5. The MediaTek MT6761 is a good processor for a smartphone under 100 euros and has a performance of 2 GHz. The Honor 8S is also visually similar to the Huawei Y5 and is one of the more modern devices on this list, but it suffers from the camera - like even the best smartphones under 100 euros. This triggers on the back with 13 megapixels and on the front with 5 megapixels. That's enough for simple snapshots, but not for more. With its 5.71-inch display and a resolution of 1,520 x 720 pixels with a pixel density of 295 ppi, it is on average in its price range.

The size of the internal memory makes the Honor 8S one of the best smartphones under 100 euros. This is quite large for such a cheap smartphone with 32 GB, which can of course still be expanded. The battery is also relatively average with its 3,020 mAh. We are only looking in vain for a fingerprint sensor or NFC.

Xiaomi Redmi 7A for less than 100 euros

The Xiaomi Redmi 7A is definitely one of the best smartphones under 100 euros. So the price-performance ratio is really good here! The display is not really out of line with a diagonal of 5.45 inches and a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels. However, the Xiaomi Redmi 7A can come up with a battery that is quite large for smartphones under 100 euros. 4,000 mAh can easily get you through the day and, thanks to the energy-efficient hardware, possibly even longer. In terms of computing power, the Xiamo Redmi 7A is in no way inferior to its competition. The built-in Snapdragon 439 has a clock rate of 2 GHz and is supported by 2 GB of RAM.

With a resolution of 12 and 5 megapixels for the main and front cameras, the camera is not a photo miracle, but it should be sufficient for snapshots. In addition, the Xiamoi Redmi 7A comes with Android 9 and therefore Face-Unlock.

Motorola Moto E5 for less than 100 euros

In terms of display size and resolution, the Motorola Moto E5 is very similar to the other representatives of the best smartphones under 100 euros. So here too, with a 5.7 inch screen diagonal, we achieve a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels. The battery, however, is in the upper range for smartphones under 100 euros and has a capacity of 4,000 mAh. In addition, the main camera has a resolution of 13 megapixels and takes relatively good pictures in daylight. However, it cannot be used in dark light conditions. This is not uncommon even for the best smartphones under 100 euros. The front camera with 5 megapixels also doesn't make great selfies and is not a purchase argument.

The built-in Snapdragon 425 is not particularly fast with a maximum speed of 1.4 GHz. The 2 GB of RAM is also not exactly above average, but not unusual for this price segment. The internal 16 GB storage space can, however, be expanded by up to 128 GB. In addition, the Moto E5 can be used with two SIM cards despite using a microSD card. Also worth mentioning are the fingerprint sensor and the quick charge function and the not exactly positive fact that the Moto E5 is still shipped with Android 8.

ZTE Blade A7 for less than 100 euros

For one of the best smartphones under 100 euros, the ZTE Blade A7 is pretty big. So it comes with a screen diagonal of 6.09 inches, but only dissolves with HD +. We also have to do without a fingerprint sensor here. In return, the ZTE Blade A7 scores points with a stylish exterior. The display is almost borderless and the drop notch looks modern. The front camera is also good for the price with a resolution of 16 megapixels.

Unfortunately, the Blade A7's camera isn't exactly awesome. Like the cameras on most smartphones for less than 100 euros, it only takes reasonably good pictures in good lighting conditions. The built-in processor comes to just 1.6 GHz and is supported by 2 GB of RAM. That's enough for phone calls, chatting or surfing, but nothing more. The internal memory of 32 GB can also be expanded and there is also the option of using two SIM cards.

Wiko Y80 for less than 100 euros

With a screen diagonal of 5.99 inches, the Wiko Y80 is also one of the slightly larger smartphones under 100 euros and scores with an elegant design. At a pixel density of 269 ppi, however, there is a slight blurring. The 13 and 2 megapixel dual cameras and the 5 megapixel front cameras are not uncommon for this price range and do their job. In terms of RAM and processor, 2 GB of RAM and a performance of 1.6 GHz do not offer the most fluid experience in everyday life. For a smartphone under 100 euros, these are still acceptable values.

However, a dual SIM function and the option of expanding the somewhat limited internal memory of 16 GB are positive. However, we have to do without NFC and a fingerprint sensor. On the other hand, the 4000 mAh battery makes the Wiko Y80 one of the best smartphones under 100 euros and, with its economical performance, more than easily gets you through the day.

Nokia 2.2 for less than 100 euros

With a 5.71 inch screen diagonal, a resolution of 1,520 x 720 pixels and the 13 megapixel single front camera, the Nokia 2.2 is fairly average in its price range. The MediaTek Helio A22 processor, which is capable of a performance of 2 GHz, and the 2 GB of RAM are not really out of line in the list of the best smartphones under 100 euros. What is nice, however, is the replaceable battery. So if this is behind you at some point, you can simply replace it yourself with a new one. The slightly narrower battery capacity of 3,000 mAh is also completely sufficient for the low power.

With 16 GB of expandable memory and a dual SIM function, most users shouldn't have anything to complain about. Surfing, emailing or even streaming should be possible with the device without any problems. Since we're still talking about a smartphone for less than 100 euros, that's completely sufficient. Merely NFC and a fingerprint sensor would be desirable.
