Which HDD Company Is Best

Storage

Nothing is forever. This also applies to saved data if you use the wrong data carrier. When the music CD was introduced, the critics had circulated rumors about the durability of the data. Today, almost 40 years after its introduction, we know better: Pressed CDs last between 50 and 80 years. However, not all data carriers available today have such a lifespan.

Often, however, this is not even necessary for the stored data. So that you can always select the right data carrier for the intended purpose in the future, you will find an overview of the currently available data carriers with the most important advantages and disadvantages in terms of availability, security and durability of the data on the following pages.

Mechanical internal hard drive: the cheap solution

The classic among data carriers is the mechanical hard disk (HDD). It consists of several discs that are magnetized without contact. The internal data carriers are currently mostly connected to the computer via the SATA interface. Current hard drives support the SATA III standard, which is often referred to as SATA 6 GB / s. This allows you to write and read data sequentially at around 550 MB / s.

The mechanical hard drives are available in two different formats: 2.5 and 3.5 inches, with the smaller format mainly used in notebooks. The prices for a mechanical hard drive for the high-performance 3.5-inch models are between 30 and 40 euros per TB. The smaller hard drives in 2.5-inch format are a bit more expensive and ultimately cost between 50 and 60 euros per TB. This makes them very cheap - based on the price per storage unit.

However, mechanical hard drives are also vulnerable to heat, temperature, and humidity. Given these environmental factors, an internal hard drive is assumed to have an average lifespan of around five years.

Conclusion: mechanical internal hard drive

HDDs are a great choice when it comes to storing large amounts of storage for a limited amount of time. This can be the data carrier for the operating system, for example, or it can relate to data that only needs to be kept for a short period of time. However, this storage medium does not represent an optimal long-term storage.

Mechanical external hard drive: Also for on the go

Mechanical hard disks are very popular as external data carriers, which are usually connected to the computer via the USB 3.0 interface - even in the USB-C version. This means that the SATA interface of the hard drive no longer has the decisive influence on the data transfer rate, but the USB interface. According to the specification, USB 3.0 has a maximum data transfer rate of 5 GBit / s (slightly slower than SATA III with 6 GBit / s), USB 3.1 theoretically achieves up to 10 GBit / s. In reality, however, current USB 3.x hard drives only deliver around 150 MB / s for both reading and writing.

As with the internal models, there are two different form factors for external hard drives: 2.5 inches and 3.5 inches. In both cases, however, the devices are significantly larger than the actual hard drive, as the controller and, in the larger model, the power supply must also be accommodated.

In terms of price, the external models are a little more expensive than their internal counterparts: The 2.5-inch hard drive costs between 45 and 55 euros per TB, the 3.5-inch version is again at 30 to 35 euros significantly cheaper.

The durability of the external models, if you carefully surround them with them and protect them against impact, is around ten years, about twice as long as that of the internal counterpart. The main reason is the better way to dissipate the heat to the outside.

Conclusion: mechanical external hard drive

An external hard drive is a great way to make a quick backup of your computer's hard drive. Due to the compact size of a 2.5-inch hard drive, this can even be done while on the move. With these external hard drives you have an optimal data carrier for medium-term archiving of your data.
