If the facial skin is not even and shines constantly, expensive creams, home remedies such as ice cubes or even mixed cucumber masks often show no lasting effect. STYLEBOOK asked an expert for tips and tricks that refine the complexion and help against large pores.
Along with pimples, large pores are one of the most unpleasant blemishes, which is why many would like to do without their pores completely - they have a very useful function. Dr. med. Tanja C. Fischer, dermatologist from Berlin, explains to STYLEBOOK: “Pores are small openings that occur in innumerable numbers in human skin. They are small channels through which the body secretes sebum. This sebum is used to keep the top layer of skin, the so-called horny layer, and also the hair supple. ”According to the expert, sebum production also has an important protective function. The sebum is important to protect the skin from diseases, bacteria and environmental influences.

How do enlarged pores arise?
“The size of the skin pores is mainly genetic. Those who tend to have oily skin tend to have larger pores and are also more prone to pimples, acne and blemishes in general, ”reveals Dr. Fisherman. In addition, the pore size is influenced by environmental influences such as UV rays, personal lifestyle (nicotine, stress, alcohol, unhealthy diet) and the natural aging process. The expert knows that in certain phases of life, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause, sebum production is increased due to the hormonal change.
What to do at home with large pores
The face should not be washed too often. Twice a day - in the morning and in the evening - is sufficient, a moisturizing, pH-neutral cleaning agent helps optimally. Large pores are not a result of impurity. In general, the following applies to care: Avoid creamy and oily textures, prefer to use light fluids or refreshing and moisturizing gels as care. For very oily skin that produces excessive sebum and has large pores, products with high doses of retinol (vitamin A) are recommended. Tea tree oil, zinc, silicon and salicylic acid also have a sebum-regulating effect.
Clarifying face masks, for example with healing clay, help refine the pores. They stimulate blood circulation and promote the excretion of excess sebum. The mask is supposed to bind to clogged pores and blackheads and then set. In this way, the impurities are easily pulled out of the skin when the mask is removed.

Make-up clogs the pores and promotes pimples
There are plenty of pore minimizers available in stores. However, these can only visually hide enlarged pores instead of actually making them smaller. The polymers contained in it are placed in the pore and prevent the light from refracting in the recess. So-called primers and make-up bases have a similar effect. Make-up should only be used sparingly and infrequently. In the case of large-pored skin, the foundation often gets stuck in the pores, which makes them look even bigger and creates an unsightly overall appearance.
It is best to conceal flaws only in places with a concealer instead of covering the entire face with make-up. Alternatively, it is advisable to use a light BB or CC cream instead of a foundation. One thing is important, especially with large pores: light protection. Because when the skin ages faster, it becomes slack and the pores also expand.
