Well worth the liposuction

Liposuction: advantages and disadvantages of liposuction

Liposuction is the most common aesthetic procedure in this country. But it is not without risks.

During liposuction, cannulas are pushed into the skin through small puncture sites and fat cells are sucked out.

Almost everyone has a part of the body where it should be a little less. According to figures from the Society for Aesthetic Surgery in Germany, excess fat was suctioned off around 19,000 times on Germany's operating tables in 2009. So-called liposuction is one of the most common aesthetic interventions.

Try diet first

But liposuction is not an alternative to weight loss, says Joachim Graf von Finckenstein from the German Society for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery. "Anyone who thinks they have tens of pounds less on the scales after an operation is wrong."

People with a body mass index (BMI) over 25 should first work on the extra pounds with exercise and a change in diet. "Diet and exercise shape the whole body, liposuction only affects certain problem areas."

Liposuction has limits

There are clear limits to the beautification: "Too much fat must not be removed because otherwise the skin will be wrinkled or slack and needs to be tightened," explains Prof. Dennis von Heimburg, specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery in Frankfurt. In smaller, outpatient procedures, a maximum volume of two liters is aspirated. "For larger interventions, it can also be a little more," adds von Finckenstein.

Risk: dents, dents, adhesions

Even and gentle removal is important in order to prevent dents, bumps or slackening, which can occur as undesirable side effects. A small layer of fat between the skin and muscles must remain: "Otherwise there is a risk of adhesions," warns von Heimburg.

Even if the suctioned fat cells do not grow back at this point, patients can also gain weight there again. "The remaining fat layer can expand again a little." As a rule, however, this is not threatening. "It is always important that the liposuction takes place in harmony with the body line," adds von Finckenstein. "Otherwise the result will not look good."

Treatment abroad can be problematic

Anyone who wants to tackle the annoying fat must first seek a doctor. But the cosmetic surgeon market in particular is teeming with black sheep - and poor quality.

Temptation offers from abroad would always offer the best price, but not the best quality, warns Johannes Bruck, Vice President of the Association of German Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons: “The patient can quickly face incalculable costs. And in the worst case, complications arise that then have to be corrected in Germany. "

Aftermath: bruising, swelling, severe pain

The fact is: liposuction requires observation and follow-up care. This cannot be implemented on a one-week vacation abroad, emphasizes von Heimburg. Be it bruises, swellings, severe pain: "Patients must be able to go to the treating doctor so that he can assess the wound healing."

Every year people die from liposuction

Often enough, liposuction is viewed as a harmless, cosmetic flash correction - a dangerous underestimation. "Every year people die from the risks and side effects of such interventions," says the surgeon.

The background is on the one hand underestimated or neglected risk factors in patients, such as heart failure, allergies or wound healing disorders. But hygiene errors or inadequate thrombosis prophylaxis on the part of the attending physician can also have devastating consequences. «Patients should therefore inform themselves precisely about the training of the doctor,» advises von Heimburg. And don't get hold of the first offer.
