middle East Israel and Palestine: The Unresolved Conflict

Road to Peace: Two-State Solution?

The UN, the European Union and the USA - with the exception of the former US President Donald Trump - have been campaigning for two equal states for decades.

According to the plan, an independent Palestine should be created - in return, the Arab states should recognize Israel. The Palestinian state is to emerge along the so-called Green Line. It marks the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians see as their capital. Israel occupied the territories in the 1967 Six Day War.

So far, however, all attempts to implement the two-state solution have failed.

Palestine refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish state

The Palestine Liberation Organization had already approved the plan in 1988. In the meantime, however, the radical Islamic Hamas rules in the Gaza Strip. It does not recognize Israel and demands a Palestinian state in the entire area of historical Palestine.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly spoke out in favor of a Palestinian state in 2009. However, six years later he declared that he would not accept an independent Palestinian state.

Netanyahu demands that the Palestinians recognize Israel as a "Jewish" state, which the Palestinian leadership rejects.
