Little guide - instructions for real gold panning Foreword This little guide is written for beginners and beginners as well as friends of gold prospecting and gold panning. You will get a first insight into the topic of gold panning, its processes and techniques and what you should consider when looking for the yellow metal. Further information is described in the second section of the excursion programs for panning for gold. I wish you an eventful day in search of gold. Introduction: A touch of romance and adventure comes over you when the first gold tinsel appears on the bottom of the gold panning pan and glitters in the sun. Vultures and eagles, high on the horizon, watch the hustle and bustle of the gold knights on the brook. You think I am giving a description of the gold rush on the Yukon (Canada) in 1898? Error I am reporting here on the example of gold panning in the valley of the Geier Rauris, in Austria, about the first steps of gold panning. Gold panning for beginners Although the topics of gold, gold panning and gold panning are very complex, it is easy to learn gold panning and its technique. Under the motto: "It's all a matter of practice and experience" you can plunge into pleasure relatively quickly. However, you should also bring a certain attitude with you at the beginning of the gold hunt so that the experience really works. Gold panning (logically) takes place outdoors and it is therefore essential to bring weatherproof, warm clothing. When working, by or in the stream, rubber boots should definitely not be missing. For guaranteed success, additional local knowledge and the obligatory wash bowl (pan) are necessary. You can usually get these on loan for a small fee at the designated gold panning stations. I would advise you to take a "trial course" or "beginners course" at the beginning, as those who are familiar with the area know exactly where to find gold successfully. Panning for gold without finding gold is only half the battle. You can get an overview of the costs of the gold panning course and the equipment under gold panning price list. What is still missing is patience, perseverance and more patience. Panning for gold is like fishing or mushroom hunting, not a quick act that can be dealt with in 5 minutes. However, the gold find will reward them for their perseverance. I know, I have now written about things that do not interest you very much, you want to learn something about the technique of panning for gold and you can now do that on the following pages Gold panning The success of gold panning is partly due to the exposed points at which the sand is removed for the gold panning process. The technique and the process of panning for gold is simple and can be learned by anyone. Choose a comfortable seat by the running water. Fill your panning pan with gold sand mixture. Shake the filled bowl vigorously 10 times under water so that the heavy gold sinks to the bottom of the wash pan. At the same time, the dusty parts of the sand are loosened. Stop shaking and move the slightly inclined bowl, still under water, sideways to and fro so that the topmost sand area can drain off. Repeat this step until you have finished There is still about a handful of material in the gold pan. This concentrate is lifted out of the bowl with about 1/2 liter of water. To do this, the remaining sand is washed in a cautious circular motion more and more over the edge of the bowl until the first grains of gold are visible. Repeat this process and use tweezers, toothpicks or dry fingers to put the gold in a tube filled with water Gold panning consists of the lighter sand and gravel mixture being washed out over the edge of the washing pan. The heavier gold remains at the bottom of the basin. The wash gold from the Ache, the stream or the riverIn the high mountains, the intensive mechanical and chemical weathering, mostly through frost splitting, the effects of glaciers and precipitation, leads to the crumbling of the rocks and the ores they contain these were washed down into the valley and further crushed in the process. During this natural crushing process, the gold grains contained in the rock and ore masses are exposed. The different mouth velocities, the rock bedrock and the nature of the terrain lead to a separate deposit of the ore and gold particles carried along in various places. When the stream reaches the valley floor, the mineral grains are separated Deposited in different places according to their density (specific gravity). Mineral rocks of high density such as gold, silver and other ores are preferentially deposited in places with low muzzle velocity. These are mostly bends, islands and depressions, also called soaps in technical jargon. The knowledgeable gold washer knows these soaps through a trained eye. This is where the expression of the state champion in gold panning, Josef Haslinger (Rauris), comes from: You have to be able to read the brook. This everlasting natural event makes it possible, even today, to wash gold from the mountain streams, equipped with a washing pan and rubber boots. The prerequisite for this is that the mountain ranges described contain this gold. One of these mountains is the Hohe Tauern in the Salzburgerland, where gold mining has a centuries-long tradition. You can read more about the history of gold panning on the pages of How long does it take a beginner to find gold panning for gold? Success in panning for gold depends, of course, on the (right) places where you look for gold. But also whether you have mastered the correct technique of panning for gold. So two things that you only master after a certain amount of time and training: Here I would like to compare it to a fisherman who knows the places on the stream or river where e.g. stop the trout and cast his fishing rod there. As a rule, the skilled and experienced fisherman will make his catch and take the prey home with him. While you could learn the technique of panning for gold at home in a vat filled with sand and gold grains (a boring affair), finding the right spots is a boring affair at the brook, exclusively connected with experience and "reading the brook". Just as the fisherman recognizes where the trout could be in foreign waters, so the experienced gold washer knows at which bends (soaps) the gold is deposited. But even experienced gold panners are not immune to failure. The experience of gold panning scout Theo Huber from Rauris teaches us that beginners who try it on their own are 90% frustrated when they leave their place of happiness because they are not in the right place Theo Huber reports that in a beginner's course in gold panning, in the right place and with the right technique, the newcomer can find his first gold tinsel in the washing pan in around 20 to 30 minutes. At the beginning of the gold panning course, the beginner also receives a basic introduction to the terrain, locations, techniques, stream flow and the composition of the (washing) material. With expert guidance and assistance during the gold panning process, no quicker but guaranteed success is then possible. The cost of a gold panning course is between 6 euros (e.g. in Rauris) and 45 euros depending on the duration, equipment and location. A gold panning course for beginners is not absolutely necessary, but for those whose goal is to find gold now and in the future , a tremendous help. Note: Please note that gold panning courses always work on the natural stream and in the open area. Washing in specially set up tubs is boring and usually only installed for tourist purposes.Gold panning with children Although gold panning is always a highlight for children, you should make sure that a replacement program is available for a longer holiday in a gold panning area. You won't have any problems with motivating your children on a day trip to a gold panning site. However, a longer vacation with just the gold panning experience is not the best option for children. Children quickly lose stamina, patience and motivation for a single topic. Make sure that the children soon have a sense of achievement, in other words: find gold and that a gold find guarantee is described in any courses. I am talking about panning for gold in a natural stream and not in specially provided vats, so there are two components to panning for gold, such as adventure / experience and perseverance / patience. It is therefore important to reconcile these two requirements. My experience has taught me that after 2 to 3 hours at the latest, the euphoria for panning for gold in children under 10 years of age subsides. In Rauris, however, there is the possibility to combine gold panning with other adventures in advance. Note: Don't forget to get warm spare clothes, warm drinks and something to eat. Indispensable for gold panning - the gold panning panThe gold panning pan is the most important thing, along with unshakable optimism A gold panning tool. Both plastic and iron pans are used for panning for gold. The diameter of a gold pan is between 35 and 45cm. It is believed that this utensil was first used in North America by the Indians. In our latitudes, plastic pans are very often used because the iron pans must be degreased before being used for the first time, then heated and quenched with cold water. Never use the iron pans greased, as the gold flakes stick to the fat, become lighter and float away. The iron pans take on a steel blue color after greasing and quenching. After using the iron pan, it must be greased again to counteract rust, as before mentioned, the majority of gold panners use the plastic pan. The reason is their handiness and stability. There are also grooves in the plastic pan that make panning for gold child's play and enable a better yield. The gold tinsel gets caught on the grooves and is deposited there. This makes it much easier to remove the gold. The color of the plastic pan is also important. Here, particularly dark colors are chosen, in which the gold tinsel stands out most clearly. The colors dark green, dark blue and dark gray are preferred. If a real gold pan is too expensive for the first attempts at washing, you can of course use any similarly shaped object. I am thinking of a huge, disused frying pan from grandma's kitchen. Here you remove the style of the pan and you have a fully functional gold pan. Tip: Most of the time, gold pans are also lent for a small fee at the public gold panning sites. E.g. in Rauris gold panning bowl made of plastic and shovel for 4.00 euros per person per day (as of 2013) Checklist for panning for gold If you go on a trip to panning for gold, you should consider a few things in order to avoid frustration when looking for the gold . Selection of the place or the river or stream Select a place or river where gold panning is offered (allowed). Make sure that the gold prospecting takes place directly on the stream or river. Panning for gold in vats, as offered by some holiday resorts, is boring. In any case, find out where and when gold panning is allowed and which equipment you are allowed to use before leaving. In order to avoid long tours and frustration when looking for the gold, I recommend a gold panning course. (6 € per day in Rauris including equipment). A course like this pays off 100%. When panning for gold on or in the stream / river, rubber boots are absolutely necessary, fishing boots up to crotch height are best. Warm socks The water in the stream / river is usually very cold, so make sure you have extra thick socks. 5. Warm clothingWarm clothing is also often required. Make sure that the cold or wet doesn’t thwart your gold prospecting. In the great outdoors it can happen that it rains or a slip occurs in the stream bed. Take warm spare clothes with you 6. Is there something to eat and drink on site? Think of your (hungry) children - they take food with them. Or how far is the nearest shop or inn? The gold panning equipmentMost of the time, the equipment is provided for the gold panning course, inquire beforehand. Spade better shovel The folding shovel works best here to remove upper layers of rock or gravel or to dig in the river bed. Another hand shovel and garden hoe respectively. a geologist's hammer to loosen solid rock. Available in every garden center. Pay attention to what is allowed at the respective gold panning locations. 2. Heart of the gold panning pan This is available in outdoor shops, but in any case where gold panning is offered. Gold panning bowls are available in plastic and metal. While the professionals use the metal pan in many places, the masses use the plastic or plastic pan. Plastic pan used, mostly in dark colors to make the gold easier to see. In any case, the pan should have built-in grooves in the inner area, which hold back heavier particles and the gold. A plastic pan works just as well as a metal pan and, above all, is easier to care for. Attention: The flat gold pans used in championships and competitions are unsuitable for gold mining in natural streams / rivers. Be sure to. Gold pans are available for between 19 and 55 euros, depending on the size and design. In theory, gold panning can also be done with an old frying pan whose style has been removed. The gold panning bowl with grooves is definitely more practical and effective. Plastic tube, tweezers, magnifying glass The transparent plastic tube is used to fill the gold tinsel there. The tweezers to get the gold out of the basin. And the small hand-held magnifying glass to look at even the smallest gold particles. For small gold tinsel you can also use a sniffer bootle that sucks up the tinsel by pressing it. 4. A hand sieve can be used to wash out coarse material. This equipment is also available in metal and plastic. The plastic hand sieve is sufficient in any case, especially since this sieve, also known as a classifier, is not absolutely necessary for beginners. How many euros do beginners have to invest in gold panning and what costs arise for beginners in gold panning? Basically, you can remove an old frying pan whose style you remove has to fill with the sand-gold mixture and start washing out. However, this procedure is laborious and not very profitable. This is probably more about empathizing with the old gold rush mood than the goal of finding gold grains. If I assume that you have rubber boots and warm clothes, all that is missing is a so-called gold panning pan or gold panning bowl to start panning for gold Plastic bowl with grooves built into the side. The grooves serve to hold back the gold tinsel, which is heavier than the sand mixture. There are gold pans in different sizes and mostly in dark colors (dark green, dark blue, black) in order to be able to recognize the gold dust better. The price of such gold pans increases from the cheap version with 17.95 to about 54 euros - with the stable version. However, you do not need to buy this piece of equipment right away as most gold panning courses provide a bowl, so the problem for the beginner panning is not so much the equipment as the technology and the gold prospecting location, so I advise you To avoid frustration and unsuccessfulness, take a beginner's course in gold panning. Using the gold panning course for beginners in the Vulture Valley, Rauris, you can see the costs of such a beginner's gold panning course.Note: Gold panning course for beginners with guaranteed find, loan equipment, glass tubes and certificate in Rauris, cost 6.00 euros in 2013 The wash takes place with the Austrian state champion in gold panning Sepp Haslinger and the gold panning scout Theo Huber. Independent gold panning including gold panning bowl and shovel 6.00 euros per day and person. As you can see, it is definitely not an expensive pleasure.Tip: What you have to bring with you to panning for gold is: PatienceDriving to Rauris to the gold panning area After Rauris you come via the Tauern Autobahn Salzburg towards Villach. At the Bischofshofen junction, turn right towards Bischofshofen, St. Johann, Bad Gastein. You continue via Schwarzach to Taxenbach and turn right there to Rauris. After Rauris you also come via Zell am See - further via Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße - further to Taxenbach. Shortly before Taxenbach, turn right to Rauris. From Taxenbach it is 10 kilometers to Rauris and another 12 kilometers to Bodenhaus to the gold panning site. The gold washing area is located below the Tauern massif and the Goldber group. When you arrive in Rauris, stay on the Rauris bypass road and continue towards Wörth (4 kilometers). You stay on the main road and continue in the direction of Bucheben (4 kilometers). You drive past Bucheben in the direction of - Bodenhaus (another 4 kilometers). In Bodenhaus you come directly to the Alpengasthof Bodenhaus, where large parking spaces (€ 2.50 per day) have been created. They park their car there. You walk about 100 meters in the direction of Kolm Saigurn Straße where there is a toll station for cars. You can walk through here free of charge. You will see the gold washing area sign on the left. You turn into the path on the left and after another 150 meters you are at the original gold washing place Rauris where you can see Mr. Haslinger or Mr. Huber is received.Important note: For larger groups or several people (10 participants or more) it is necessary to make a reservation, as there is a large rush during the main washing times.
It would be nice to see you in the golden valley of Rauris
