Are scales the foundation of music theory

In addition to instrumental lessons, ensemble and orchestral playing, music theory forms the third pillar of comprehensive training at the music school. The interaction of all three areas results in a comprehensive musical foundation.

The subject "Music Theory" is divided into harmony and composition theory (classical and jazz), analysis, form theory, ear training, hearing analysis, improvisation and composition and is taught in a practice-oriented manner.

We first deal with listening and singing, analyzing and writing elementary "building blocks" of music:

  • Sound system, clef
  • Rhythm (note values, pauses, pattern work, time signatures)
  • Listening exercises on the above-mentioned areas, musical memory exercises

The advanced music theory imparts knowledge and skills in the areas of harmony and composition theory (classical and jazz), harmonic and formal analysis, improvisation and composition, ear training and hearing analysis:

  • Harmony
  • Cadenzas / four-part movement
  • Figured bass
  • Harmonic analysis / shape analysis
  • Stylistic / epochal assignment
  • Parameter improvisation / style copy
  • composition
  • Writing arrangements, instrumentation
  • Extensive listening exercises / music dictations (one to four voices
  • Rhythm / rhythm dictations

Participation in this course and the SVA course is a good preparation for the entrance exams at music colleges and universities.
