In schools in the Federal Republic of Germany, same-sex lifestyles are very often not addressed and therefore taboo. This promotes exclusion and discrimination up to and including violence against girls and women, boys and men who do not conform to the heterosexual norm. The insults as "gays", which can often be heard in schoolyards, are known. In school, different ways of life must be actively addressed if one of the educational goals is to promote tolerance and equality. Gender mainstreaming in schools means adequately implementing this educational goal.
The tabooing of same-sex lifestyles in school leads to problems on several levels.
- On the one hand, she meets children and adolescents who develop into lesbian, gay or bisexual forms. Their marginalization will be tolerated. If they are open about their sexual identity, then they are ridiculed and harassed by classmates. Young people are left alone with their questions and problems. Estimates assume around 1 to 2 adolescents of non-heterosexual orientation per grade level in higher grades. They are particularly affected in the difficult phase of their "coming out" when they realize that they do not feel heterosexual, which usually happens between the ages of 12 and 17.
- On the other hand, the tabooing of same-sex ways of life for children and young people means not getting to know the diversity of today's social life and possibly also accepting discriminatory behavior. Without active education about different ways of life, children and adolescents do not learn to go into the world with an understanding of differences. This means that an important part of the state's educational mandate is not being fulfilled. This is particularly worrying when studies show that homophobic acts of violence (attacks against actual or alleged gays or lesbians) outside of school are very often committed by boys of school age.
- After all, the tabooing of same-sex lifestyles in schools places a considerable burden on teachers who are homosexual or bisexual themselves. The pressure of having to hide one's own life leads to negative psychosocial consequences and impairs performance as well as the quality of life of those affected
At school there are different ways of making equality orientation effective.
- The task of the school in the context of the educational mandate can also be explicitly defined with a view to gender mainstreaming: The goals are the individual development of personality, respect for others and freedom from violence when dealing with and resolving conflicts, i.e. conveying the fundamental values of the constitution. Schools must therefore take a clear stand against discrimination and a lack of tolerance. There are also suitable pedagogical approaches for this.
- Curricula can be designed to be gender-sensitive and equality-oriented. This means, for example, not only treating the topic of sexual orientation in the subjects of biology and social studies as a "problem" that "others" have. Rather, questions about the different ways of life can be integrated into numerous subjects: when dealing with literature, selecting examples in all subjects and teaching basic social skills.
- In the classroom it has proven to be very useful to include lesbian-gay projects that are differentiated towards the questions and needs of young people and that both inform and create acceptance. One example is the Lambda youth network.
- Teachers can acquire personal and didactic skills within the framework of training and further education in order to be able to deal with discrimination and differences, i.e. also with the issue of gender and sexual orientation. There are several offers for this in Germany that have been developed using lesbian-gay pedagogical competence. One example is KomBi - communication and education from the other bank: pedagogical concept, Berlin 2004,
- Teachers can only fulfill their task of being a confidante for young people if they themselves live in a working atmosphere in which there is trust and acceptance. For historical reasons, many gays and lesbians at school are afraid of being marginalized. Experience shows that this climate improves considerably if teachers do not have to hide their own way of life. A supportive campaign by the competent authority can set important signals here and help break the taboo.
- Decisive for the situation and for development opportunities of young people is acceptance in the group of their peers. School is where people of the same age meet. If it creates a climate of acceptance on the symbolic level, much is gained. Examples are events, well-placed posters, films or theater on the subject of the diversity of life forms.
- Politics can help promote a climate of acceptance and tolerance in schools. In this way, it is possible to work in the committees as well as in public and, for example, to create and multiply awareness in the state student council.
