How often should you exfoliate your face?

Peeling: The be-all and end-all for the regeneration of your skin

Step by step - or layer by layer - for a fresher complexion. A peeling removes old, dry skin cells, cleanses the pores and stimulates blood circulation. The skin becomes softer, cleaner and healthier.

A peeling should be used regularly so that the skin can better absorb care substances. But which peeling is the right one? Do you prefer a mechanical or a chemical peeling?

There are different types and areas of application: an exfoliation for the body, face, lips or scalp.

In this article you will find out which products are recommended, how you make your own peeling yourself and everything else you should know about peeling.

What is a peel?

  • It loosens dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin
  • It promotes blood circulation
  • It refines the complexion and cleanses the pores
  • It stimulates cell renewal
  • It helps the skin to be better able to absorb care substances afterwards.

The effect: softer, smoother skin.

The different types of peeling

Body peeling vs. face peeling

The skin on the face and décolleté is particularly sensitive and in need of protection. Therefore, only gentle peelings and care products that are specially designed for this area should be used here.

Facial peelings are usually finer and gentler than body peelings. If you have very sensitive skin, be careful not to exfoliate too often or too vigorously.

A body peeling is usually a little less complicated, as the skin on the arms, legs, back and stomach is not as fine and sensitive as the skin on the décolleté and face.

Here the peeling pearls are a bit larger and are therefore better suited for the large areas of skin. There are, for example, shower gels that contain peeling pellets or special peeling gloves made of sisal, silk or cotton, with which you can peel the whole body in a time-saving way.

What is a mechanical peel?

A mechanical peeling is the classic peeling in which the old flakes of skin are removed by rubbing. They contain fine abrasive balls such as fruit kernels, bamboo granules or sugar, which free the top layer of skin from dandruff when rubbed in.

It is the weakest form of exfoliation as it only works on the surface.

In addition, this type of peeling is not suitable for all skin types. Sensitive skin is quickly prone to irritation, redness, pimples or extreme dryness.

What is an enzymatic peel?

An enzyme peeling is the gentler version of a peeling and is also suitable for sensitive skin. When the enzyme peeling is applied, various enzymes act on the skin and loosen old cornifications.

Enzymatic peelings act like mechanical peelings on the upper layer of the skin, but are much gentler and cause less skin irritation.

What is a fruit acid peel?

A fruit acid peel is a chemical peel that contains acids from grapes, sugar cane, or other plants. It works deeper in the skin and not only loosens the superficial flakes of skin, but also stimulates the skin's metabolism and stimulates collagen production in the middle layer of the skin.

A fruit acid peel is particularly suitable for scars from acne, pigment spots, small wrinkles or skin impurities and should only be used in a cosmetic institute or by a dermatologist.

Is it harmful to clean the skin with peelings?

In itself, the cornea is an important barrier in the body against environmental influences. If the top layer of skin is removed mechanically too often, it will form more and more small scales. In addition, the skin, especially on the face, can be irritated. Redness, pimples or extreme dryness then show that she wants rest.

Chemical peelings can also be very aggressive and should therefore only be carried out by trained cosmeticians or dermatologists.

It should also be noted that peeling has limits. All "damage" cannot be removed with peelings. Pigment spots, very blemished skin or signs of aging such as deep wrinkles are resistant to microspheres, enzymatic or chemical peelings.

How often should you use an exfoliator?

The skin cells renew themselves permanently - every 28 days. This effect is helped with a peeling, because dead skin cells are removed.

Important: don't overdo it! Exfoliating too often can even lead to skin aging, as the skin cells have to divide faster than usual.

With normal skin, about one peeling per week is sufficient, more often than that means stress for the skin. The drier the skin type, the more distance there should be between applications.
